GR5 Titanium Wire: High-Strength Ti-6Al-4V Alloy Wire for Aerospace & Medical Applications

Baoji Jucheng Titanium Industry Co., Ltd., a leading manufacturer based in China's Titanium Valley, specializes in producing gr5 titanium wire (Ti-6Al-4V) with over 20 years of industrial expertise.

Our titanium wire satisfies ASTM B863, AWS A5.16 and AMS 4951 requirements with yield strengths of at least 828 MPa and ultimate tensile strengths of at least 895 MPa.

We provide diameter ranges from Φ0.1mm to Φ8.0mm in annealed or cold-worked states, with a 3,000-ton yearly inventory and over 500 titanium equipment sets produced. Our vacuum annealing technique eliminates delayed hydride cracking, which is essential for medical implants and aerospace fasteners, by maintaining the hydrogen level below 150 parts per million.

What Is GR5 Titanium Wire?

The most popular titanium grade in the world, alpha-beta Ti-6Al-4V alloy (UNS R56400), is represented by titanium wire. 90% titanium, 6% aluminum, and 4% vanadium make up its composition.

The engineering problem of obtaining high strength-to-weight ratios is resolved by this alloy. With fatigue resistance up to 400°C, it produces components that are 50% lighter than steel.

This wire has three times the tensile strength of commercially pure titanium grades. Its dual-phase microstructure strikes a balance between load-bearing capability and ductility.

Key Advantages for Your Applications

Exceptional Strength-to-Weight Performance

Your designs require maximum strength with minimal weight. Our wire delivers tensile strength comparable to steel at half the mass.

This advantage reduces fuel consumption in aerospace assemblies. It enables thinner, more efficient medical device designs.

Biocompatibility for Medical Use

If you manufacture surgical instruments or implants, biocompatibility is non-negotiable. Our wire exhibits osseointegration properties comparable to Gr23 (ELI).

It resists body fluid corrosion without toxic ion release. FDA-compliant processing ensures tissue compatibility.

Superior Corrosion Resistance

Your equipment faces harsh chemical environments. The aluminum-enriched oxide layer provides self-passivation in marine and chemical processing applications.

It outperforms stainless steel in chloride-rich environments. This extends service life in offshore platforms and desalination plants.

Heat Treatability

You can enhance mechanical properties through solution treating and aging. This flexibility allows customization for specific load requirements.

Cold working increases hardness for spring applications. Annealing restores ductility for complex forming operations.

Quality Control Process

We implement rigorous inspection protocols addressing your critical pain points:

Chemical Analysis: Aluminum and vanadium content are confirmed by ICP-OES testing. To avoid embrittlement, Inert Gas Fusion verifies hydrogen concentrations below 150 ppm.

Surface Inspection: 100% Eddy Subsurface flaws are found via current testing. Die marks that cause fatigue cracks are removed by magnified eye inspection.

Mechanical Testing: Tensile and wrapping tests per ASTM B863 ensure ductility. Samples undergo cyclic loading to predict service life.

Dimensional Verification: Laser micrometers measure diameter consistency along entire lengths. This guarantees smooth feeding in automated welding systems.

Primary Applications

Aerospace Engineering

Our wire is used by manufacturers for rivets, high-vibration fasteners, and safety-critical springs. During flight cycles, it endures drastic variations in atmospheric pressure.

Fatigue resistance is advantageous for landing gear components. Temperature stability up to 400°C is utilized by engine bay components.

Medical & Dental Devices

Orthopedic surgeons rely on this material for bone fixation wires and screws. Dental laboratories fabricate implant frameworks requiring precise biocompatibility.

Surgical instrument manufacturers value its non-magnetic properties. It remains stable during MRI procedures.

Additive Manufacturing

Your 3D printing systems need consistent feedstock for Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM). Our wire maintains tight diameter tolerances (h7/h9) for jam-free operation.

It reduces material waste by 70% compared to traditional machining. Complex geometries for marine propulsion systems become economically viable.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What differentiates gr5 titanium wire from Gr2 wire?

A: The composition and strength of the alloy are the main differences. Gr2 pure titanium has a modest tensile strength (~345 MPa) but good corrosion resistance. Gr5 (Ti-6Al-4V) is perfect for structural applications where Gr2 would distort under load since it offers around three times the strength (≥895 MPa).

Q: Does this wire need to be welded using special techniques?

A: Yes. It requires strict cleaning and inert gas shielding (argon/helium) when used as ERTi-5 filler metal. Brittle joints are the result of alpha case production brought on by atmospheric pollution during welding. Equipment setup and training must be done correctly.

Q: Can your wire be anodized for color coding?

A: Absolutely. It supports Type II and Type III anodizing for functional color coding or enhanced wear resistance. Medical device manufacturers use this for size identification. The oxide layer forms uniformly across the alloy surface.

Q: How do you prevent hydrogen embrittlement?

A: Our multi-pass hot drawing process includes vacuum annealing cycles that remove absorbed hydrogen. We provide certification showing hydrogen content below 150 ppm. Proper pickling procedures avoid re-contamination during surface treatment.

Q: What delivery formats are available?

A: We supply random coils, precision spools (D300 standard), and straight lengths for TIG welding rods. Surface finishes include acid pickled, chemically polished, or centerless ground depending on your application requirements.
